Momentum works in partnership throughout Scotland to enable and empower disabled and excluded people to identify and achieve their goals.
We currently assist 2200 people across Scotland each year in the areas of brain injury, spinal injury, mental health difficulties, physical disability, learning disability, employment, community rehabilitation and care.
Operating in 29 locations across Scotland, we help people to gain the skills they need to live independently and to move into work. We deliver training and rehabilitation to disabled and socially excluded people across the country helping them to move towards education, training and jobs. Our services stretch from Aberdeen, Inverness and Fife to Glasgow, Ayrshire and the Borders.
Formerly known as Rehab Scotland, we changed our name to Momentum in March 2003 to better reflect the positive developments taking place in our organisation.
Momentum is part of Dublin-based Rehab Group, a not-for-profit organisation which has been leading the way internationally in the provision of services for disabled people since 1949. Each year more than 60,000 disabled and excluded people access Rehab Group's training, employment, social care and commercial services in the Group's network of 200 centres across Ireland and the UK.
We also have three sister services in the UK: Rehab UK, The Chaseley Trust and TBG Learning. All of our sister organisations have the same philosophy and values as Momentum, namely to provide a range of programmes that assist disabled and excluded people to move towards work and independance and to learn in their own communities.
Giving the people we help a voice in shaping services is one of Momentum's priorities. Malcolm Chisholm MSP, then Minister for Health and Community Care, launched Momentum's Clients' Charter of Rights and Responsibilities in October 2002.
Now the charter is complemented by Momentum's National Service Users' Council, formed in 2003 to ensure service users are represented at all levels of the organisation, and are give the chance to contribute to the design, development, monitoring and evaluation of our services.
Our care division, Momentum Care was set up in 2004. We offer flexible social care services to people with a wide variety of needs including those with a physical or learning disability, alzheimer's, dementia, HIV-related difficulties, substance misusue issues and terminal illness.
In 2004, social enterprise firm Haven Products joined the Momentum group. Haven Products provides meaningful employment and development opportunities for disabled people while operating as a commercially viable business. Haven employs around 110 staff, 86% of whom are disabled, at its three sites at Hillington, Greenock and Inverness.
Momentum now employs almost 450 staff, 29 percent of whom are disabled people.
We are active members of a number of professional bodies, including the European Platform for Rehabilitation and the Social Care Association. Momentum has been accepted as an Approved Provider of social care services by a range of local authorities.
