Factsheets - Brain Injury

One person every 30 seconds sustains a head injury in the UK.

  • In Scotland around 16,500 adults withstand a head injury each year, most commonly in road accidents, but also in falls, assaults, strokes, haemorrhages or sporting accidents.
  • Most head injuries occur between the ages of 18 and 25.
  • Head injury is the main cause of disability in men under the age of 60 in the UK.
  • 1 in 50 of the population attends a hospital Out Patient Department with a head injury.
  • Survivors of serious head injury can have multiple problems: physical, mental, emotional, behavioural, social and economic. Their quality of life and behaviour may change dramatically, impacting not only on those who have been injured but also on their families and carers.
  • Medical advances in recent years mean that significantly more people now survive a serious brain injury. This means however that the need for specialist intervention to assist people to rebuild their lives has also increased.
  • Without specialist support such as that offered by Momentum, only 30% of people with brain injuries will return to employment.
  • Momentum is a national not-for-profit organisation, which works in partnership throughout Scotland to assist disabled and excluded people to identify and achieve their goals and to maximise their independence.
  • Momentum - which was formerly known as Rehab Scotland - pioneered the UK's first vocational rehabilitation service for people with traumatic brain injury in 1993.
  • Momentum presently provides specialist brain injury rehabilitation programmes throughout Scotland in the Borders, Glasgow, Aberdeen and North Ayrshire.
  • Momentum's brain injury services assist people to live independently following brain injury and to manage the effects of their injury. The organisation also assists people to move towards employment or further education/training, focusing on what they can do and supports them as they return to work.
  • Momentum now supports over 80% of project participants into employment or on to further education/ training. Without specialist support such as that offered by Momentum, only 30% of people with brain injuries will return to employment.
