Every year, one in four people in Scotland will suffer from a mental health problem.

  • In Scotland, more and more people are seeking help for mental health problems with more than one in three consultations at GP surgeries involving some aspect of mental health.
  • Almost three quarters of Scots know someone close to them who has been diagnosed with a mental health problem.
  • A full recovery is made by more than 80 percent of sufferers.
  • Anyone can suffer from a mental illness but many people don't like to talk about it, fearing discrimination from family, friends and colleagues.
  • People with mental health problems report more than twice as much harassment as the general population - almost one in three of those move home as a result.
  • Only 21 percent of people with long-term mental health problems work, compared to 49 percent of disabled people overall.
  • Mental health problems account for around 35 percent of absences from work.
  • Momentum has been providing mental health services since 1992, enabling and empowering people with mental health difficulties to gain skills and to move towards employment or further education/training.
  • Momentum currently operates a range of innovative mental health services across Scotland, including Aberdeen's Employment Support Team, Fresh Start in Glasgow and Work Matters, Paisley.
  • Momentum currently assists around 200 people every year with mental health difficulties to increase their independence and confidence and to prepare for job opportunities, education and a better quality of life.
  • Momentum is a national not-for-profit organisation, which works in partnership throughout Scotland to assist disabled and excluded people to identify and achieve their goals and to maximise their independence.
  • The Scottish Executive has identified mental health as one of three key clinical priority areas for the health service in Scotland and has introduced a number of initiatives to improve service delivery.
  • The Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 is now law, the Bill having passed unanimously in the Scottish Parliament on March 20, 2003.
  • The Act addresses areas such as compulsory care and treatment of people with mental disorders, the creation of a Mental Health Tribunal, patient representation, medical treatment safeguards.
