Factsheets - Physical Disability

Scotland has 830,000 disabled adults, one in seven of the population.

  • Disabled people account for 20 percent of the working age population in Scotland.
  • Of the working age population, 39 percent of disabled people are in employment compared with 81 percent of able-bodied people.
  • Two thirds of households with a disabled person have an income of £10,000 or less.
  • In Scotland there are 96,000 wheelchair users registered with the NHS.
  • Every year, an estimated 14,500 people become wheelchair users for the first time.
  • In 1999/2000 local authorities spent five percent of the total community care expenditure on physically disabled adults.
  • Only around one third of Scottish householders with a disabled resident own their own homes, compared with more than half of those without a disabled resident.
  • Momentum's services for people with physical and sensory disabilities assist clients to focus on what they can do. Training is directed at supporting them to move towards independence and employment.
  • With the innovative use of assistive technology and specialised support, Momentum's services assist clients to move into jobs or further education by breaking down barriers and restrictions to learning.
  • Some of Momentum's disability services also have an outreach/home support element to ensure that all clients have the opportunity to participate in our programmes.
  • New legislation took effect in October 2004, giving disabled people the right to better access to services. Under the final stage of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act, organisations and businesses, which provide goods or services to the public, must ensure that their service is reasonably accessible to disabled people. This may mean removing physical barriers to access, installing a lift or new toilets.
